Croft is proper old-school. A former wartime airfield in North Yorkshire that has hosted the BTCC for decades and never fails to deliver dramatic racing. The long Barcroft straight gives cars time to slipstream and set up overtakes into the tight Clervaux complex. Then the track snakes through the Jim Clark Esses before opening up again through Tower and Hawthorn. It is a circuit that rewards rear-wheel-drive cars on the faster sections but punishes them through the slower, tighter stuff. The surface is abrasive and eats tyres. Weather in North Yorkshire can change three times before lunch. If you are a driver who likes things predictable, Croft is not your friend.
Sutton's 98-Point Lead: Is This Thing Over?
Let's be honest. Ninety-eight points. That is not a gap. That is a canyon. Ash Sutton left Donington Park having extended his advantage yet again and he has publicly said he will not change his approach heading into Croft. Why would he? The man has won more races than anyone else this season and his consistency on the days he does not win is arguably even more impressive. Second place behind Cammish in Round 20 on hard tyres while most of the field ran mediums was the kind of result that breaks the spirit of anyone chasing him.
The maths is brutal for everyone else. With three rounds remaining and a maximum of roughly 67 points available per weekend, Tom Ingram and Dan Cammish need Sutton to have a disaster just to get within touching distance. Ingram has admitted Donington was a really difficult weekend and that he is now focused on finishing the season strongly rather than thinking about the title. That tells you everything. Sutton is not just winning this championship. He is suffocating it.
Ingram Needs a Response
Tom Ingram topped free practice at Donington but could not convert that pace into the results he needed on Sunday. The reigning champion lost further ground and now sits nearly 100 points adrift. Croft should suit the EXCELR8 Hyundai better than Donington did. Ingram has historically gone well here and his racecraft through the tight sections is among the best on the grid. But he cannot afford another quiet weekend. Even a podium or two will barely scratch Sutton's lead. He needs wins. Multiple wins. And he needs Sutton to score poorly on the same day. The odds are not in his favour but writing off Tom Ingram is always a mistake.
Morgan's Form Is Ridiculous
Adam Morgan called Donington his best-ever BTCC weekend and it is hard to argue. Three wins from one event. Pole on Saturday. Lights-to-flag in the qualifying race. Lights-to-flag in Round 19. Then another victory in Round 21 from the front row after dispatching Smiley on lap one. The CPRL Mercedes is operating at a level nobody predicted when this team was literally in administration a few weeks ago. Morgan is driving with total confidence and Rowbottom is right there with him providing the data and the benchmark.
Can he keep it up at Croft? The Mercedes has looked strong everywhere this season but Croft's mix of fast straights and tight corners will test it differently to Donington's flowing layout. Morgan's record at Croft in previous seasons is solid. If the car gives him anything close to what it gave him last weekend, he will be fighting at the sharp end again. He might not be in the title conversation but he is absolutely in the conversation for best form driver in the second half of 2026.
Gilbert Walks Away From a Barrel Roll
Lewis Gilbert's Donington weekend lasted approximately half a lap of Round 19 before contact from Tom Chilton sent his WSR BMW into a barrel roll. A proper, heart-in-mouth, car-upside-down moment that had everyone in the paddock holding their breath. Thankfully the young Scot walked away completely fine and WSR confirmed the car will be repaired. But what a way to learn about the rough side of touring car racing. Gilbert has now experienced the best and worst of the BTCC in the space of a few weekends. The question for Croft is whether the accident sits in his head or whether he shakes it off and gets back to learning. His teammates Rainford and De Leon are both scoring well. De Leon grabbed a podium in the Donington finale with a storming drive from deep in the pack. Gilbert needs clean laps and clean finishes. Nothing more, nothing less.
Laser Tools' Best Weekend of the Season
Slightly under the radar at Donington was the performance of Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport. The team enjoyed its best points-scoring weekend of 2026 and Árón Taylor-Smith will arrive at Croft feeling much more positive about the package beneath him. His Brands Hatch rain victory earlier this season proved he can win when opportunity knocks. Croft's unpredictable weather could hand him another chance. If the team can build on Donington's momentum, Taylor-Smith could be a dark horse for a top five or better this weekend.
Dan Lloyd's Return Gathers Pace
Dan Lloyd slotted back into the Restart Racing Hyundai at Donington after replacing James Dorlin and now heads to Croft with a weekend's worth of reacclimatisation under his belt. Lloyd won the Independents' title with this team last year so he knows exactly what the car needs. Croft should suit his aggressive style through the Clervaux braking zone. Alongside Chris Smiley, Restart have two experienced heads who can extract every last tenth from the Hyundai. Do not be surprised if Lloyd pushes into the top ten this weekend.
Three Rounds Left: The Stakes Beyond the Title
While Sutton's championship lead looks unassailable, the battles behind him are ferocious. Ingram and Cammish are scrapping for second overall. Morgan is on a charge through the standings. The Independents' trophy is still very much alive. And teams like Power Maxed Racing with Mikey Doble will want to end the season with more silverware after Doble showed real fighting spirit at Donington despite a tough weekend.
Croft is one of those circuits where the grid bunches up and small margins decide everything. Qualifying position matters enormously because the Clervaux complex funnels cars together and contact is almost guaranteed on lap one. The weather forecast for North Yorkshire in late August is anyone's guess. Pack your waterproofs and your sunscreen. This weekend could be anything.
Prediction Time
Sutton to bank another pile of points without necessarily needing to win. Morgan to be in the fight for pole again. Cammish to push hard because he knows second in the championship is realistically his ceiling now. And keep an eye on Rainford. Charles has been building quietly all season and a strong Croft weekend could cement a top-five championship finish for WSR. Bring it on.
