Noah Young Makes History and the Off-Season Silly Season Kicks Off

Sixteen years old. Let that land properly. Noah Young will line up on the BTCC grid in 2027 alongside Tom Ingram at EXCELR8, making him the youngest driver in championship history. The lad has been racing Ginetta Juniors and finished 12th in that series this year, which is hardly a championship-winning campaign, but Ingram himself has been coaching Young and clearly sees something worth investing in. A two-year deal too, so this is not a one-weekend publicity stunt. I have mixed feelings about it if I am honest. The BTCC is brutal. The cars are heavy, the contact is relentless and the established names will not give a 16-year-old an inch. Lewis Gilbert showed at the back end of this season that making the jump from single-seaters is tough enough in your early twenties. Doing it at sixteen from Ginettas is a completely different proposition. But Ingram backing him personally carries serious weight and EXCELR8 clearly believe the gamble is worth taking. We will find out soon enough.

Swindon Powertrain Out for 2027

This one flew under the radar a bit but it could have significant consequences. Swindon Powertrain, who have built Hyundai engines for EXCELR8 since 2022 and for Restart Racing since 2025, will not be on the grid next season. EXCELR8 chose not to renew the contract. That engine powered Ingram to two championships and has been one of the most competitive units in the series for half a decade. Losing that relationship raises big questions about what replaces it. EXCELR8 presumably have a plan already in place but the Swindon engine was a known quantity that Ingram trusted completely. Whoever supplies the new power unit will need to hit the ground running because Ingram is not the type to accept a backwards step. Restart Racing are also affected, which throws their 2027 preparations into uncertainty as well.

TCR Europe Comes to Donington

Donington Park has landed a round of the 2027 TCR Europe season. The East Midlands circuit will host the series as part of the Convoy in the Park weekend in August, making it the first European touring car race at the venue in years. This is genuinely exciting news for anyone who watches touring car racing beyond just the BTCC. The TCR cars are quick and the drivers include some properly handy names from across the continent. Having them race on a circuit that BTCC fans know inside out will make for a fascinating comparison. Whether it opens any doors for crossover entries or sparks interest from European teams looking at BTCC involvement remains to be seen, but getting more high-level tin-top racing on British soil is always welcome.

MINI CHALLENGE Locked in Through 2029

The MINI CHALLENGE has extended its deal as part of the TOCA support package through to 2029. This might not set pulses racing compared to driver announcements but it matters for the health of the BTCC weekend as a whole. The MINI series has been a solid feeder for young talent and provides proper entertainment between the main races. Keeping that continuity means teams and drivers in the junior categories can plan ahead with confidence. Three more years of guaranteed grid time on BTCC weekends is exactly the kind of stability the support paddock needs.

The Quiet Before 2027

We are firmly in the off-season now and the silly season is only just warming up. Sutton is locked in until 2031. Ingram has his new teenage teammate. Chilton has retired. Sam Osborne has retired. Collard's situation at EXCELR8 remains unclear after his stop-start 2026 arrangement. The engine supplier shake-up at Swindon Powertrain could trigger a chain reaction across multiple teams. And somewhere out there, Jason Plato is still teasing announcements without actually making one. The 2027 grid is going to look different and I suspect we are only seeing the first few pieces of the jigsaw. Keep your eyes on BTCC Hub over the coming weeks because the real silly season drama usually hits when you least expect it.
